Compare indicators across Canada’s geographies — provinces, census divisions and subdivisions, metro areas, health regions and federal ridings. Pick a single indicator, or two at once — as a bivariate map or a linked scatterplot.
How to read this 🍁
Areas, not people
Two-variable views show how indicators relate across places. A pattern between areas need not hold for individuals — assuming it does is the ecological fallacy. Treat correlations as a prompt to look closer, not proof.
Suppression & rounding
Statistics Canada suppresses or random-rounds small counts to protect privacy. Areas with no reliable value are drawn in grey and labelled n/a. Counts are rounded to the nearest 5; median incomes to the nearest $500.
Comparing fairly
Classes are quantiles of the currently shown geographies, so colours rescale when you switch province ↔ census division. A coarser layer hides within-area variation. When two indicators come from different reference years, a note appears.
Reading the trends
Many indicators carry a year control and an over-time chart. Household income is in 2020 constant dollars — inflation-adjusted, so 2016 → 2021 is real growth; dwelling values and rents are nominal, the raw market. Census 2016 figures are recast onto 2021 boundaries, which lands ~97% of subdivisions — a few that were redrawn show 2021 only.
Housing isn’t the whole story
Rent, dwelling value and the price-to-income ratio are a big part of cost of living, not all of it. The North is the clearest case: subsidized housing keeps shelter costs low while food and fuel run far higher, so cheap housing there doesn’t mean cheap to live. For a cost-adjusted view, use the Market Basket Measure low-income layer — a poverty line set by the cost of a regional basket of essentials, with the territories on the Northern MBM.
